Ybor City has always been known for its cigar rollers. Take a stroll down 7th Ave. and peer into the windows of one of the many cigar lounges and you will see a number of cigar rollers working diligently to roll as many high-quality cigars as possible. This Saturday, the local Chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, Suncoast NORML, is looking for the best roller in the bay, but not the best roller of tobacco cigars.
The Best Blunt in the Bay contest is returning this Saturday at Ybor City’s Chillum Mushroom and Hemp Dispensary. Join Suncoast NORML for Best Blunt in the Bay featuring defending Bay Area Champion, The Weed Whisperer defending her crown. Medical Cannabis consumers take pride in how they roll their medicine, how well you roll your “blunt” or “joint”” often serves as bragging rights amongst friends. Medical Cannabis consumers in the Bay Area can prove they are the best at “blunt rolling” by entering the Best Blunt of the Bay Rolling Contest.
This rolling competition will be set up much like a competitive eating competition, but instead of seeing who the best at downing hotdogs is, contestants will be rolling a variety of different hemp filled “joints” and “blunts”. The contest will include such challenges as Best Joint, Best Blunt, and the Freestyle competition to allow contestant to get creative. Contestants will be judged on speed, style, and of course how it smokes! Which means judges will be required to smoke a piece of every contestant’s joint submission. Judge tickets are limited!
Surprisingly, this blunt rolling competition isn’t all fun and games. Suncoast NORML is the local chapter of the National Organization of the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), which is the oldest and largest organization calling for marijuana reform. Suncoast NORML likes to have a good time, but this organization provided add to legalize medical marijuana in the state and played instrumental roles in the decriminalization of cannabis in the City of Tampa and Orange County.
“We spend a great deal of time educating Floridians on the benefits of cannabis and lobbying to reform our cannabis laws. The truth is cannabis can be a good time and it’s time to do just that, not take ourselves so seriously, and have a little fun!”, said Christopher Cano, Executive Director, Suncoast NORML. “That being said, we have to remember why we are here. Cannabis use is a victimless crime and a tool our government uses to keep arrest rates high in minority communities. We’ve made a great deal of progress, but there is a lot of work to be done. Coming to events like this allow us to keep moving forward.”
